Just in time manufacturing is a management practice brought upon the formative years of alternative workspaces. The idea is simply providing desk space only when needed.
Ad agency Chiat Day implemented this design in their main L.A. and New York offices and was seen as a pioneer of new office designs. At first, the idea was the pinnacle of workplace innovation due to its quick and accessible design for workers.
Despite the original glowing reviews, staffers revealed that the reality was not as inventive as once perceived.
“The end result was described in detail in a 1999 piece in Wired after the firm had abandoned both the idea and the offices. “For a brief, swirling period … the ad agency became engulfed in petty turf wars, kindergarten-variety subterfuge, incessant griping, management bullying, employee insurrections, internal chaos, and plummeting productivity. Worst of all, there was no damn place to sit.”
