Remote working has become a big portion of the employer population and with distant work options becoming more readily available, the market has begun to adapt to the needs of these digital nomads with better internet and coworking spaces.

According to gapyearescape.com, Bali was found to be in the top 25 destinations for digital nomads. Along with this, a recent Nomad List study listed Indonesian islands Canggu and Ubud as popular and cheap digital nomad destinations.

Amar Hussain, Founder of Gap Year Escape, conducted an analysis of Instagram images with the hashtag #digitalnomad and found that the top ten destinations were:

  1. Bali, Indonesia
  2. London, United Kingdom
  3. Chiang Mai, Thailand
  4. Lisbon, Portugal
  5. Barcelona, Spain
  6. New York, USA
  7. Bangkok, Thailand
  8. Los Angeles, USA
  9. Paris, France
  10. Berlin, Germany

The cost of living among these destinations varies greatly and ultimately depends on if a digital nomad lives more like a local (eating out less) or a tourist.

“With the increase in coworking spaces, internet infrastructure, remote jobs and the desire to live the laptop lifestyle, the number of digital nomads is on the rise,” Hussain said. “Digital nomads have no limits geographically so there are plenty of dream destinations to live and work.”
