Here’s Why The World Of Work Could Be The Perfect Environment To Introduce The Metaverse To The Masses

The Metaverse To The Masses
  • Metaverse applications are hitting the mainstream with many targeting workplaces and workers.ย
  • The lines between the office and home are now increasingly blurred thanks to the metaverse.ย
  • The metaverse needs careful management to promote the health of workers.ย

Metaverse.ย ย

Itโ€™s one word with many definitions, depending on who you ask.ย Microsoftย calls it โ€œa persistent digital worldโ€.ย Alibaba Cloudย says itโ€™s โ€œthe next generation of the internetโ€. Facebook, well, they took things even further with the companyโ€™sย recent rebrandย to Meta.ย

Semantics aside, the metaverse fuses the real and virtual worlds, giving users a 3D space to meet, shop,ย and do everything that you can on the internet, and more. Itโ€™s just now you donโ€™t just interact with that world through a screen, youย can be part of it thanks to the wonders of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).ย

In fact, the metaverse is where VR and AR could finally get their moment in the Sun, after years of languishingย in the tech doldrums.ย ย

Justinย Hochberg, CEO and co-founder of metaverse creation companyย Virtual Brand Group,ย said: โ€œTo me, the metaverse is the perfect trifecta of platform capability, consumer scale,ย and deep engagement that is simply better than anything that has ever come before it. And itโ€™s actually now. Billions of people are playing, living in it every day.โ€ย

โ€œBill Gates once said to my team in the early days of interactive TV, โ€˜Being early is the same as being wrongโ€™. We were too early then for that. But we arenโ€™t for the metaverse.โ€ย

Itโ€™s a good point.ย ย

The worlds of VR and AR (not toย mention consumer attitudes towards these technologies) have come a long way since the early days of Google Glass (anyone elseย remember those?).ย

In fact, the fate of the metaverse very much rests in the hands of the devices we use to access it. Just as desktops wereย usurped by mobile devicesย as the primary means to access theย internet,ย pundits are predictingย that VR headsets, AR glasses and other such wearables will be our primary way to access the metaverse in the future – and when we do, a wealth of new opportunities lie before us.ย

What about the world of work?ย ย

How willย workย be impacted by the metaverse? Weโ€™re already seeing modest moves into this space.ย Microsoft, for example,ย announced plansย to let users of its Teams collaboration platform to appear as avatars in video meetings.ย ย

But will such efforts just fall flat on their (virtual) faces?ย

Maybe not.ย ย

Actually, the world of work could be the perfect environment to introduce the metaverse to the masses as workers become increasingly comfortable with new forms of virtual interaction, according to Microsoft execs in a recent article fromย the Financial Times.ย

โ€œWith 250m people around the world using Teams, the introduction of avatars will be the first real metaverse element to seem real,โ€ said Jared Spataro, the head of Microsoftย Teams, speaking in the same FT article.ย

With the level of change thrust upon the world of work recently, this logic makes sense. Hochberg added: โ€œToday you canโ€™t not think about how people can work in the metaverse since everyone works every day and it’sย changed so much in the last 18 months.โ€ย ย

โ€œIn addition, every study shows Gen Zโ€™s revolt from traditional officing. Truly collaborative shared spaces are not only productive and fun but will unlock huge value.โ€ย

But this will not be an overnight process, as Adrian Rashad Driscoll, head of immersive at interactive entertainment companyย Collimation, explained: โ€œJust like any other technology, there needs to be time to make it palatable to everyone (or at least most people).โ€ย ย

โ€œRemember the first cell phonesย were huge and didnโ€™t do much. Now that the technology is powerful enough to support wireless opportunities in VR/AR, and people donโ€™t have to depend on an expensive and powerful computer. We can bring this to the masses.โ€ย

Hardware issuesย

One of the key issues for many whoโ€™ve used AR/VR applications before is that the hardware is often expensive and cumbersomeย to use.ย

But this is where Facebook may have a solution, according to Driscoll, who explained: โ€œFirst, they have made an all-in-one headset (Quest 2) thatย is affordable to a good amount of people.ย This is the first step to inclusion and adaptation of this technology. Second, they are investing a ton of money into creating content that will keep people interested in this tech.โ€ย ย

Thereโ€™s also Microsoftโ€™sย AltspaceVRย platform, Driscoll points out, where users can interact with people in a number of metaverses – you just donโ€™t need a headset to use the spaces. Unity is another offering from the Microsoft stable, a real-time 3D development platform for building metaverse applicationsย ย

โ€œThese applications will create new and exciting ways to collaborate. This not only adds enjoyment to the workplace, it fights potential burnout. Although there are a number of solid collaborativeย apps out there, these are the ones I would look out for,โ€ Driscoll added.ย

Thanks to the (already) rapid pace of technical development, there are plenty of new applications hitting the mainstream from startups and big tech companies alike, helping workersย enter the metaverse.ย ย

Samย Englebardt, CEO ofย Galaxy Interactiveย (a VC fund dedicated to the interactive entertainment ecosystem), said: โ€œThe future of work and the future of play are converging and weย have so many portfolio companies that I believe are going to be relevant to both.โ€ย

Itโ€™s quite a fitting statement, as the metaverse blurs the lines between the real and virtual worlds, so will the metaverse blur the lines between work and play. In our newย hybrid world of work, the metaverse seems like a natural next step.ย

But is it a step we want to take?ย

โ€œThe metaverse is a dystopian nightmare,โ€ writes John Hanke, founder and CEO at software house Niantic,ย in a company blog post. โ€œLetโ€™s build a better reality.โ€ย

Itโ€™s a strong stance but the sentiment is important –ย the world of work (in fact, the world in general) must tread carefully asย the metaverse starts to develop and grow in both scale and complexity.ย ย

Just as hybrid working initiatives must beย carefully managedย to promote a mentally healthy workplace, the metaverse will need a similar (if not, greater) amount of management to make it a safe space for everyone.ย Itโ€™s the ultimate hybrid environment, where the real and virtual worlds converge.ย Yet, there seems to be a lack of advice in managing this latest phenomenon thatโ€™s set to hit the world of work.ย

Of course, itโ€™sย early days and in the brave, new world of the metaverseย andย thereโ€™s time to make sure we steer things in the right direction.ย Because the potential of the metaverse is limitlessย andย with the right strategies in placeย today, we can allย make theย world a meta placeย forย tomorrowโ€™s workers.ย
