AI is now altering how parents think about their children’s futures. A survey of U.S. parents of 12- to 24-year-olds by Zety found that 97% fear AI could disrupt or replace their child’s career within the next decade.

Schools May Not Be Preparing Kids for the AI Era

One in three parents (36%) believe schools are not equipping students with the skills needed for AI-era jobs. As a result, 71% of parents say they are — or plan to be — heavily involved in guiding their children’s career paths, reflecting growing concern over the adequacy of traditional education.

Job Security and Career Opportunities at Risk

Parents highlighted multiple risks to their children’s futures. More than half (54%) worry their kids will face fewer opportunities than their generation. Other top concerns include fewer job openings (59%), unstable or short-term roles (57%), and lower earning potential (56%).

Skills for an AI-Driven Workforce

Parents overwhelmingly agree that children will need to reskill multiple times throughout their careers. Technical skills such as coding, AI, and data analysis were seen as most critical (52%), followed by soft skills like adaptability and communication (33%).

Entrepreneurial skills and critical thinking were lower priorities but still valued.

Children’s Career Interests Shifting

Despite AI anxieties, parents report their children are gravitating toward reliable, hands-on, or structured careers. Skilled trades led the list at 29%, corporate jobs followed at 28%, and government or public service roles at 23%.

Fewer children showed interest in entrepreneurship, creative fields, or digital content creation.

Parents Taking Charge

The findings suggest families are becoming more actively involved in career guidance, focusing on resilience, adaptability, and long-term stability. As AI reshapes the labor market, parental influence may play a key role in shaping the next generation’s workforce.
