Nearly half of full-time U.S. workers searched for new jobs last year, and over a quarter plan to start looking again soon. Yet the process is taking a heavy toll: more than two-thirds say job hunting has hurt their mental health, and nearly 65% believe landing a job today is harder than before, according to a Jobseeker Trends Report by TopResume.

Key Motivations Behind the Job Hunt

Money remains the top motivator for job seekers, with over two-thirds aiming for higher pay. But many also pursue better work-life balance (54%), job security (40%), and flexible remote or hybrid options (34%).

Career growth and meaningful work also drive the search for new opportunities.

Challenges and Adaptations in the Job Search

The search is often slow and draining: more than a quarter of successful job seekers spent over 16 weeks before starting a new role, while only one in five secured a job in under a month. Nearly a third say the emotional strain includes anxiety, burnout, and frustration.

Despite these challenges, candidates are adapting. While traditional job applications dominate, 11% now use AI tools like ChatGPT to find jobs or tailor resumes. Younger workers especially embrace AI and social media for job hunting.

Yet less than a third tailor their resumes for every application, risking rejection by automated screening systems.

Lying on resumes is surprisingly common — over 60% admit to embellishing titles, skills, or experience. This behavior is most prevalent among Gen Z and millennials.

Interview Dynamics and Ghosting

Interviews are evolving, too, with over 40% experiencing AI-led interviews, which many find demanding to prepare for. Even after interviews, ghosting remains widespread — more than 70% report being left without a response, especially younger candidates.

As technology and workplace expectations shift, job seekers face a uniquely challenging market marked by longer searches, mental health struggles, and complex trade-offs. Yet they continue to adapt with new tools and strategies in hopes of landing their next role.
