Some 16% of employees in Germany believe their own job may be at risk due to artificial intelligence (AI), according to a survey released on Monday.

The labour market report 2025 by career platform Xing found that the trend is growing, with the number up from 14% last year.

Of the 2,000 employees questioned for the representative survey, some 29% said they believe AI will replace many human workers.

The outlook varied among age groups, however, with only 25% of 25 to 34-year-olds saying they believed many jobs were at risk due to AI, compared to 32% among those aged 18 to 25 and 55 to 65.

Younger adults were more likely to agree that AI will help to create new possibilities for innovation and solutions, while only 21% of those aged 45 and older shared the optimism.

According to a study by Germany’s Institute for Employment Research (IAB) and others published in November, while AI is likely to cause significant upheaval on the labour market, the total number of jobs is expected to remain stable.

Around 1.6 million jobs would be affected by the structural change, with some being lost and others created over the projection period, researchers found.

The IT and information service sector is believed to particularly benefit from the developments, with demand expected to lead to around 110,000 new jobs.
