Remote hiring showed modest improvement at the end of 2025, according to FlexJobs’ latest Remote Work Index, signaling stabilization after a slower stretch earlier in the year. Fully remote job postings rose 3% in the fourth quarter, based on listings tracked between October and late December.
The increase suggests remote work has not disappeared from employer hiring strategies, but it is becoming more selective and increasingly focused on experienced professionals.
Experienced Workers Dominate Remote Openings
Most remote roles posted in Q4 were aimed at mid- to senior-level talent. About two-thirds of openings targeted experienced professionals, while managerial and senior management roles made up nearly another 30%. Entry-level remote jobs remained limited.
Project management, computer and IT, sales, client services, and medical and health roles continued to account for the largest share of remote job volume, reflecting steady employer demand in operational, technical, and client-facing functions.
Engineering and Consulting Lead Remote Job Growth
While overall growth was modest, several fields recorded sharper gains in remote hiring. Engineering roles saw the largest increase, followed closely by consulting, product, business development, and project management positions.
Medical and health roles maintained consistently high levels of remote availability, while technology, sales, marketing, and communications continued to post stable numbers of fully remote jobs.
Not all categories moved in the same direction. Customer service, administrative, insurance, HR, recruiting, and operations roles experienced an average decline in remote postings during the quarter.
These decreases may reflect seasonal hiring patterns, cost controls, or the impact of renewed return-to-office requirements in some organizations.
High-Paying Remote Jobs Remain Concentrated at the Top
Demand for remote work at the senior level continued to support six-figure salaries in select roles. Senior software engineers, product managers, engineering managers, senior project managers, and account executives ranked among the most in-demand remote positions with pay exceeding $100,000.
The concentration of high-paying remote roles in technical, product, and revenue-focused positions points to a market that favors specialized skills and leadership experience.
Large Employers Continue to Hire Remotely
Several large organizations remained active remote employers during the quarter, particularly in healthcare, life sciences, defense, and enterprise services. Companies including Thermo Fisher Scientific, Centene, General Electric, Medtronic, and Abbott ranked among the most frequent posters of remote roles.
Flexibility Shapes Worker Expectations Heading Into 2026
Survey data cited alongside the index shows remote work remains a primary factor influencing job decisions. A large majority of workers say flexibility strongly affects where they apply, and many would reconsider their employment if remote options were removed.
At the same time, career uncertainty is rising. Many workers report reevaluating their career paths, expressing concern about job stability, automation, and the long-term availability of remote roles. Younger professionals, in particular, appear more willing to change jobs or fields in pursuit of flexibility and work-life balance.
