78% of Neurodivergent Employees Use AI at Work

Neurodivergent women reported more pressure to hide their differences and more concern about finding supportive employers.

AI tools are increasingly helping neurodivergent employees navigate workplace tasks, while many workers still report stigma around disclosure and accommodations, according to a new survey from Understood.org.

The survey found that 31% of U.S. adults identify as neurodivergent, including conditions such as ADHD and dyslexia.

AI Use Is Higher Among Neurodivergent Workers

According to the findings, 78% of neurodivergent employees say they use AI tools at work, compared to 59% of neurotypical employees.

More than half of neurodivergent workers also said AI tools made them more confident applying for higher-level roles that previously felt inaccessible because of administrative or organizational demands.

The survey additionally found that 61% of U.S. adults believe AI helps create a more level playing field for people who learn and think differently.

Workplace Stigma Remains a Barrier

Despite growing awareness of neurodiversity in the workplace, many employees still hesitate to disclose their needs.

Seventy percent of neurodivergent employees said they worry disclosure could negatively affect them at work, while most respondents said employers need better education around accommodations and support systems.

Many workers also reported uncertainty around workplace policies. Seven in 10 neurodivergent employees said they do not know what accommodations they are entitled to, and 60% said they are unsure who to approach to request support.

Neurodivergent Women Report Greater Pressure

Neurodivergent women face additional workplace challenges, including stronger pressure to mask behaviors and greater concern about finding supportive employers.

More than one in five neurodivergent women who requested accommodations said they had been denied.

AI and Workplace Accessibility

The findings arrive as companies continue integrating AI tools into hiring, communication, and productivity workflows. For many neurodivergent employees, those systems are increasingly functioning as workplace accessibility tools rather than just efficiency software.
