Elon Musk Says AI Could Make Coding Obsolete By The End Of The Year, Upending Software Engineering

The prediction comes as Anthropic reports AI now generates most of the code merged into its systems, fueling debate over how much engineering work machines will absorb.

Elon Musk believes software developers may soon stop writing code altogether.

During remarks shared publicly from an xAI all-hands meeting, Musk argued that AI systems will eventually generate machine-level code directly, eliminating the need for traditional programming languages and even compilers. He suggested the transition could begin as early as the end of this year, according to Yahoo Finance.ย

AI Coding Tools Are Advancing Quickly

Musk’s prediction comes as AI companies report rapid adoption of coding assistants.

Anthropic recently disclosed that more than 80% of the code merged into its codebase is now generated by its Claude AI models. The company also reported significant increases in engineer productivity and said AI systems are handling increasingly complex software tasks. According to Anthropic, AI-generated code is approaching human-level quality and could surpass it in some areas within the next year.

Human Roles Are Still Expected to Remain

Even among companies building advanced coding AI, the expectation is not that engineers disappear.

Instead, developers are increasingly shifting toward reviewing AI-generated code, setting requirements, defining system architecture, and making higher-level product decisions. Anthropic identified human review as one of the remaining bottlenecks in software development, suggesting oversight and judgment remain essential.

Big Tech Is Investing Heavily in AI Development

The push toward AI-generated software is becoming a major battleground for technology companies.

Microsoft continues expanding GitHub Copilot and reported strong growth in AI-related revenue. Google is investing in coding-focused AI systems including Gemini and AlphaCode. Tesla’s own AI ambitionsโ€”including autonomous driving, robotics, and custom AI hardwareโ€”depend heavily on accelerating software development through automation.

For workers, the debate is increasingly shifting from whether AI can write code to how much of the software development process humans will continue to control.
