Illinois Employers Face New Menopause Accommodation Requirements In 2027

Flexible schedules, extra breaks and temperature-controlled spaces are among the adjustments employers may need to consider for workers experiencing menopause symptoms.

Illinois employers will need to prepare for new workplace requirements under the Illinois Menopause Equity and Care Act, which is scheduled to begin taking effect January 1, 2027. The law clarifies employees’ rights to reasonable accommodations for menopause-related conditions and requires those rights to be included in employee handbooks alongside workplace notices, according to Chicago Business.

Employers Should Review Policies Before the 2027 Deadline

Menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, sleep disruption, anxiety and cognitive changes, can affect employees’ work experiences. Erin Cook, partner and president of Connect Search, argues that employers should prepare by educating managers, reviewing accommodation procedures and making relevant benefits information accessible.

Potential workplace adjustments include flexible scheduling, additional breaks, temperature-controlled spaces, uniform changes and remote work where feasible. Employers should establish consistent processes for evaluating requests while protecting employee privacy.

Benefits teams can also review coverage for menopause-related evaluations and treatments with their brokers and insurance carriers, according to Cook.

Retaining Experienced Women Is Part of the Business Case

Cook argues that inadequate menopause support can contribute to experienced women stepping away from advancement opportunities or leaving their employers. Midcareer and senior women often bring leadership experience and institutional knowledge that organizations risk losing when health needs are dismissed or misunderstood.

She recommends treating menopause support as part of workforce planning, benefits and retention efforts rather than waiting until an employee requests an accommodation.
