Google’s strategy to slash its workforce, particularly in areas not directly related to AI, is a response to the rapid development of AI technologies. This was exemplified last year with the launch of Google’s advanced AI model, Gemini, which is reported to have surpassed benchmarks of the popular OpenAI’s GPT-4 model.

The job cuts reflect Google’s move to double down on AI, and this makes way for other large tech firms to do the same as more become reliant on AI initiatives.

For the workforce in the tech sector, this presents challenges, particularly for those in roles vulnerable to automation or not specialized in AI development. The layoffs at Google, which began in early 2023, hint at a larger trend where traditional tech roles could see reduced demand. Conversely, this strategic pivot opens new opportunities for AI specialists and those with skills in AI-related fields. This major emphasis on AI from Google also reveals the growing urgency for AI literacy and skills training in the global workforce.
