Italy Opens Doors to Digital Nomads with New Visa Program

Italy has officially launched a digital nomad visa specifically designed for skilled non-EU remote workers.

According to a report published by EuroNews, the program, which went into effect on April 4, 2024, seeks to attract top talent from around the globe — allowing digital nomads to live and work in Italy for up to one year, with the possibility of annual renewal.

To be eligible for the visa, applicants must demonstrate an annual income of at least €28,000, have comprehensive health insurance coverage, provide proof of suitable accommodation, and show a history of remote work for at least six months, including a statement from their employer. The visa also allows digital nomads to bring their family members, subject to approval by Italian police headquarters.

Over 50 countries around the world now offer digital nomad visas, and this trend is likely to continue to grow as more countries recognize the economic benefits of attracting digital nomads. Traveling digital nomads contribute to the local economy without straining the job market, as they bring their own employment with them. Careful consideration of the economic benefits has recently led countries like South Africa and Japan to begin developing their own visa programs.

Italy’s introduction of the specialized visa is expected to attract remote workers to the country, providing them with the opportunity to experience one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations while maintaining their remote jobs. As more countries express interest in the specialized visa programs, Italy’s digital nomad visa positions the country as an attractive destination for traveling professionals.
