Less Than Half Of Breastfeeding Parents Feel Supported At Work

Only 44% of breastfeeding parents feel supported at work — and 1 in 3 lack reliable access to a private lactation space, demonstrating the urgent need for better workplace accommodations.

The survey suggests a clear opportunity for employers to better support working parents by offering private pumping areas equipped with hospital-grade pumps, cleaning supplies, and secure storage.

A new national survey from Mamava and Medela shows that breastfeeding support systems — particularly in workplaces and public settings — continue to fall short.

Parents surveyed cited the health benefits for both baby and mother as their top motivation (88%) for breastfeeding, followed closely by nourishing their baby with their own milk (84%) and bonding (75%). Yet despite strong intentions, only 54% were still breastfeeding at one year, and just 16% made it to two years, the target recommended by major health organizations.

Lack of support at work could be a contributing reason for the drop off over time.

Workplace Support Still Lags

Although 76% of respondents were employed, only 44% felt supported at work. One-third reported having no reliable access to a lactation space, and just 55% were aware of their rights under the 2022 PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act, which mandates break time and private, non-bathroom spaces for pumping.

The data points to a dual need: better physical accommodations and stronger communication from employers about legal protections.

Pumping: One of the Hardest Parts of Breastfeeding

Two of the top three breastfeeding challenges cited were related to pumping — managing the equipment and finding a place to use it. These findings underscore how critical proper lactation spaces are, both at work and in public. The survey suggests a clear opportunity for employers to better support working parents by offering private pumping areas equipped with cleaning supplies and secure storage.

Parents Turn to Experts and Each Other for Support

When seeking help, respondents most often relied on lactation consultants (63%), internet searches (61%), and friends and family (57%). The results signify both the continued importance of professional guidance and the power of accessible, accurate online resources.

Now in its third year, the survey offers a clear message: parents are showing up for breastfeeding — it’s time for public and private institutions to meet them there.
