A new report from Aflac shows burnout among American workers has hit its highest level in six years, with nearly three-quarters of employees reporting moderate to severe stress on the job.ย
Younger Workers and Minorities Most Affected
Gen Z now leads all age groups in burnout, with 74% reporting at least moderate levels of stress, surpassing millennials. Many workers also express declining confidence that their employers care about their mental well-being, dropping to 48% this year.ย
Outside the office, worries about money, family responsibilities, and the future continue to fuel stress levels across all demographics.
Financial Fragility and Rising Medical Costs
The report also reveals a troubling picture of financial instability. Over 40% of workers say they couldnโt afford a $1,000 medical emergency, with even higher percentages among Gen Z, African Americans, and Hispanic workers. More than half of employees say they experience โmedanxietyโ โ a term for anxiety over health care costs not covered by insurance. This growing concern has led 45% of workers to delay or skip medical care.
Confidence in insurance coverage is falling, with just 58% feeling protected in case of a major health event.ย
Why Belonging in the Workplace Matters
A sense of belonging makes a measurable difference. Employees who feel connected to their workplace report far less stress and burnout, and significantly higher job satisfaction and engagement. They’re also more likely to have positive relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
From mental health concerns to financial pressure, American workers are feeling the strain. As burnout grows and trust in employers falters, companies have an opportunity โ and a responsibility โ to rethink how they support employee well-being. Enhanced communication, expanded benefits, and inclusive workplace cultures may be the difference between retention and resignation.
