Almost Half Of Job Seekers Have Abandoned Applications Because They Took Too Long

47% of job seekers have paused their search after becoming overwhelmed.

The U.S. job search is taking a financial and emotional toll as hiring slows and candidates face increasingly frustrating application processes. Indeed’s State of the Job Seeker survey found that 46% have abandoned an application because it was too tedious or time-consuming. Another 47% have paused their job search for at least a week because they felt overwhelmed, rising to 67% among active job seekers.

54% Report Financial Fallout From Job Searching

The pressure extends beyond frustration. Forty-four percent of job seekers said they would like to take a break from searching but cannot afford to.

More than half, 54%, reported financial consequences connected to their job search, including taking on debt, delaying medical care or using retirement savings.

Among active job seekers, 41% said the search had negatively affected their mental health.

A Slow Hiring Market Is Making The Search Harder

The survey findings come as workers face what Indeed describes as a “low-hire, low-fire” labor market. Companies are hiring more slowly while unemployment remains relatively low, limiting opportunities for workers who would otherwise move into new roles.

That can also increase competition between experience levels. Senior workers seeking new opportunities may apply for lower-level positions, putting them in competition with mid-career and entry-level candidates.

79% Say Resumes Don’t Show Why They Fit

The traditional application process is another source of frustration; seventy-nine percent of respondents said a resume alone does not capture why they are a good fit for a job, while 77% said they feel forced to tailor their resume for individual postings.

Personal connections also appear to matter heavily in candidates’ perceptions of the hiring process. Thirty-four percent said personal connections give candidates the biggest advantage, compared with 17% who pointed to qualifications.

The result is a job search that many candidates see as time-consuming, financially costly and increasingly difficult to navigate, even when they have the qualifications employers are seeking.
