U.K. Unveils New Visa Program Covering 82 Jobs To Tackle Skilled Worker Shortage

The temporary visa program will provide limited-time access to foreign workers for positions deemed essential to sectors such as defence, life sciences, construction, and the creative industries.

The U.K. government is introducing a new visa scheme targeting 82 mid-skilled jobs to address persistent workforce shortages in key sectors, according to Yahoo News. Developed by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), the list spans a wide range of roles, including bricklayers, welders, IT professionals, dancers, fashion designers, civil engineers, HR officers, and health and safety managers.

The scheme is part of an effort to balance the country’s economic needs with growing concerns over immigration, especially after net migration reached a record 906,000 in the year to June 2023.

Intended as a short-term solution, the list prioritizes jobs that are vital for infrastructure development and industrial growth while the U.K. trains more domestic workers. The MAC continues to refine the list, with final recommendations expected by July 2026.
