Childcare perks in the workplace may seem like one of the basic needs of any society, but America has historically lagged in terms of proper support.Â
Although governments in other countries typically mandate some form of childcare support, as well as maternity/paternity leave, American companies are taking these efforts into their own hands.Â
While not necessarily the North Star of leadership practices, Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced that the company would expand child care benefits at his companies and has encouraged other businesses to do the same. This includes free on-site childcare for children under five. Â Â Â
Musk isn’t the only one to make a pivot to better support working parents — retailer JCPenny also said it would extend its child care perks to all of its employees, utilizing online child care marketplace WeeCare to connect staff with daycares and nannies.Â
Supporting these initiatives has always been necessary, but the pandemic blurring the lines between work and life has made them even more so as parents try to balance their responsibilities. Â
The shift to remote and hybrid work has made such benefits a must. Embracing all family structures shows working parents that they are supported and ensures that they have access to the resources that make navigating work and life responsibilities stress-free.Â
But this support needs to go beyond connecting workers to childcare services. With inflation reaching record highs, business leaders would be wise to provide more financial support that can help alleviate the stress of expensive childcare services.Â
