Currently, workers are guaranteed six paid days off, but this new proposal would provide workers with 18 days off.

Research from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) shows that Mexicans work an average of 2,124 hours per year, compared to the global average of 1,687 hours.

According to Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, president of the Labor and Social Welfare Commission of the Upper House, the International Labour Standards recommends workers should receive 18 days off based on its own analysis.

However, other senators have suggested increasing the current rate of vacation days from six days to 12.

Gómez Urrutia says that the current standard work norms do not equate increased productivity, and more paid vacation days can better support professionals in their daily lives. He added that while Mexico has among the longest work hours in the world, this hasn’t led to a notable difference in development or productivity.
