Amazon Hit With Discrimination Complaint From New York Human Rights

A new complaint filed by the New York State Division of Human Rights claims that Amazon is discriminating against pregnant employees and workers with disabilities.

According to New York state law, employers are required to provide pregnant and disabled employees with reasonable accommodations when requested.

According to the complaint, Amazon policies force employees to take unpaid leave, even when they can work, instead of providing workers with better accommodations.

The accusations include forcing a pregnant worker to lift packages over 25 pounds, then putting her on unpaid leave after she was injured. Additionally, Amazon is accused of refusing to adopt recommended accommodations for two disabled workers.

The complaint is seeking civil fines and penalties for the company, as well as pushing for better training and policies in relation to accommodation requests.

“My administration will hold any employer accountable, regardless of how big or small, if they do not treat their workers with the dignity and respect they deserve,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
