New Tesla hires are already facing layoffs, while others have seen their offers rescinded after CEO Elon Musk warned that the firm would be forced to cut back on hiring.
“I was very shocked when I was told that I was being let go,” one manager told Business Insider. “Being a manager, I was under the impression that my position was safe.”
The manager was informed that layoffs were conducted based upon performance reviews, but he refutes this stating that he “had only been at Tesla for a few months and had yet to have performance goals set or a performance review.”
At the beginning of the month, Musk told executives at the company to halt hiring due to a “super bad feeling” about the economy and forecasted having to cut 10% of the workforce. He later said that its headcount may increase, but salaried staff would not.
