Italy Spending Millions To Protect Workers From AI Job Replacement

What’s going on:

Italy has allocated €30 million to improve the skills of both unemployed people and those workers whose jobs are at high risk of being replaced due to the fast advances of automation and artificial intelligence (AI), according to Reuters. The funds will be distributed through The Fondo per la Repubblica Digitale (FRD), a fund established in 2021 to help boost the digital skills of Italians.

Reportedly, €10 million will go towards increasing the skills of those whose jobs face a high risk of being automated and replaced. €20 million will be allotted to help the unemployed develop digital skills to improve chances of reentering the job market.

Why it matters:

There’s a growing concern amongst lawmakers and regulators in Europe and around the world, regarding the potential negative impacts of AI and automation on national security, education, and employment.

As AI tools like ChatGPT continue to develop rapidly, many experts believe that new regulations are needed to govern AI and its implications on the future of work.

How it’ll impact the future:

Italy is taking a proactive approach to address the potential negative challenges forecasted by the widespread use of AI and automation. Italy taking monetary measures to help aid its workforce could be a sign of other countries taking similar measures. This move could serve as an example for other countries and these kinds of skills programs may help safeguard employees whose jobs may be at risk because it ensures that many in the workforce remain competitive and adaptable in the face of technological advancements.
