The 2022 FlexJobs survey showed that the 25% of US employees that have quit their jobs in recent months listed “toxic company culture” as their main reason for leaving.

A new survey from FlexJobs identifies the top reason for employees quitting their jobs over the last six months — and it highlights a breaking point for professionals.

The 2022 survey showed that the 25% of US employees that have quit their jobs in recent months listed “toxic company culture” as their main reason for leaving. Of those that left, 68% already had another job lined up.

“People are still considering and actively making career moves for a better work experience that will provide benefits like work-life balance and flexibility,” said Toni Frana, career services manager at FlexJobs. “From our perspective, the Great Resignation is still very much alive and trending.”

Professionals have quit their jobs in record numbers over the last few months, but toxic culture is just one of many factors that are causing this exodus.

Employees have also cited poor salary, below par management, and an unhealthy work-life balance according to the FlexJobs survey.

In fact, Frana added that across the top seven factors for employees quitting their job, “six of them revolve around the employee experience.”

This proves that simply boosting pay is no longer enough to attract and retain workers. Now more than ever, these professionals want benefits that allow them to maintain a flexible schedule, grow within their careers, and more.

If an employee is seeking to leave their current position, Frana says it’s important to not burn any bridges with employers. Only 4% of those who left their job “rage-quit,” with most simply looking to pivot careers.

While it can be difficult, avoiding any heated confrontation when quitting can be important as doing so can impact future employment. Being honest and optimistic in the exit interview should be encouraged and can give employers constructive insight into what can be improved within their own culture.
